Summer is (finally) here and what better way to celebrate than a family-friendly picnic.
But is your picnic planet friendly?
Our homemade beeswax food wraps are not only quick, cheap and fun to make – they make sure your one-use sandwich wrapping has had it’s final day in the sun.

What will I need?
- Cotton fabric squares (a great opportunity to recycle old, clean clothes)
- Beeswax pellets (you can buy these from craft stores or online for around £5)
- Baking paper
- Iron
How to:
- Cut your fabric to your desired shape and size
- Put your fabric on a sheet of baking paper, make sure the surface you’re using is heat resistant
- Scatter a thin layer of beeswax pellets over your material
- Cover with another sheet of baking paper
- Using an empty iron, set to around 150o or a wool setting, gently iron over the baking paper, melting the beeswax and pushing it gently right to the edges of your material
- Leave to cool
- Once cool, peel your baking paper away from your wrap and it’s ready to use!
Ready to use it?
- Using the warmth of your hands, mould the wrap around your food to mould it into shape – remember, bees wax has a very low melting point, so if you’re storing hot food, it’s best to let it cool before using your wrap
- You can wash your wraps in mild dish soap and cool water – laying flat or hanging up to dry
- Your wraps aren’t suitable for microwave use
- Wrap lost it’s stickiness or has a stubborn fold? Refresh them by re-ironing them between sheets of baking paper
- Have some left over wax around the edges or on the baking paper? You can peel this off to reuse on another wrap
- Make sure you’re using reusable plates, bowls, knives and forks to save on single-use items
- Place your water or squash in the freezer before you leave to use them as ice packs
- Bring your leftovers home in your new food wraps to save them for later
- Always take your litter home with you and recycle what you can
