A group of green-fingered residents at Atkinson House are sowing the seeds for success, kicking off a new gardening project that will see them grow their own fruit and veg.
The idea was planted at the last residents’ meeting when several of the residents expressed an interest in trying their hand at some gardening. After much discussion amongst the group, they settled on installing a vegetable patch. And with the weather warming up, it was time to get stuck in.
Tyler, Chris, Georgia, Vera, and Harriet started by building a wooden vegetable bed and attaching a liner. Then, they filled it with compost and carefully planted some vegetables in it, including red onions and shallots.
They also filled up potato sacks and added potato seeds and planted strawberries in troughs. A fabric planter was filled with lettuce and spring onions, and tomatoes and peppers were placed in grow bags. The final elements were a raspberry and blackberry tree.
They finished off their job by building a teepee over the vegetable patch, to protect it from birds, and giving everything a good water. Now, they’re eagerly the fruits of their labour.
Everyone did a great job, in particular, Tyler, who showed himself to be a real Alan Titchmarsh!
