We don’t just provide homes for our human residents. We provide homes from our feathered friends, too.
Earlier this year, we installed swift bricks to our homes to help local birds find a place to nest. And we’ve got more exciting plans to identify more locations for bird boxes and bricks, as well as planting in our greenspaces to increase insects as a bird food source next year, too. And now, you can join us in supporting our local bird population.
Save the date for the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch, coming 24 January to 26 January 2025.
You can sit in your garden, on your balcony or in any outdoor space to see what birds you can spot. And who knows, you might even get some surprises!
From mid-December, you can even register with RSPB to take part in the world’s largest garden wildlife survey. Sign up via their website, and spend an hour watching the birds and tell them what you’ve seen.
Seen very few birds or none at all? They’ll want to know that too.
Remember, you can leave out seed to attract your local birds (even better if you make our sustainable bird feeder from our spring issue!)
Who to expect
Look out for Sparrows and Starlings who you’re likely to see visiting your green spaces.
Remember to sign up, join in and share any photos you manage to snap. Just like Southern Housing Operational Support Officer, Becky Simmons, who captured these beautiful bird photos.
