Organisation make up
White colleagues make up the majority of the organisation, with 24.1% from ethnically diverse* backgrounds.
Ethnicity Pay Gap
The mean hourly pay for ethnically diverse colleagues is £19.61 compared to £20.03 for white colleagues which gives an ethnicity pay gap of 2.1%. The median of £18.35 higher for ethnically diverse colleagues compared to £17.51 for non-ethnically diverse colleagues which gives an ethnicity pay gap of -4.81% in favour of ethnically diverse colleagues.
About median and mean
This is the difference between the hourly pay of the median ethnically diverse employee and the hourly pay of the ethnically non-diverse employee. The median for each is the ethnically diverse employee or ethnically non-diverse employee who is in the middle of a list of hourly pay ordered from highest to lowest paid.
A median involves listing all of the numbers in numerical order. If there is an odd number of results, the median is the middle number. If there is an even number of results, the median will be the mean of the two central numbers.
Medians are useful to indicate what the ‘typical’ situation is. They are not distorted by very high or low hourly pay (or bonuses). However, this means that not all ethnicity pay gap issues will be picked up. They could also fail to pick up as effectively where the ethnicity pay gap issues are most pronounced in the lowest paid or highest paid employees.
The mean ethnicity pay gap figure uses hourly pay of all employees to calculate the difference between the mean hourly pay of ethnically diverse employees, and the mean hourly pay of ethnically non-diverse employees.
A mean involves adding up all of the numbers and dividing the result by how many numbers were in the list.
Mean averages are useful because they place the same value on every number they use, giving a good overall indication of the ethnicity pay gap. But very high or low hourly pay can ‘dominate’ and distort the figure.
Pay Quarters
24.58% of our colleagues are ethnically diverse. The greatest proportion of ethnically diverse colleagues (32.47%) are paid within the upper quartile ranges when compared to non-ethnically diverse colleagues. There is a much smaller proportion (19.93%) of ethnically diverse colleagues within the lower paid quartile when compared to 80.07% of non-ethnically diverse colleagues in this range.
Pay quarters
Pay quarters show the percentage of ethnically diverse employees and non-ethnically diverse employees in four equal sized groups based on their hourly pay.
Pay quarters give an indication of ethnically diverse employees representation at different levels of the organisation.
Ethnicity Bonus Pay Gap
Of colleagues who received a bonus payment, this equated to 84.1% of ethnically diverse colleagues and 74.3% of non-ethnically diverse colleagues.
The mean (average) amount paid to ethnically diverse colleagues was £527.77 compared to £492.35 for non-ethnically diverse colleagues.
This is a mean ethnicity bonus gap of -6.71% in favour of ethnically diverse colleagues.
The median bonus gap this was 0% as the median was £500 for both ethnically diverse and non-ethnically diverse colleagues.
*We use the term Ethnically Diverse (ED) as it relates to Black, Asian and other Ethnic colleagues (previously referred to as BAME). Ethnically diverse colleagues includes all non-white ethnic groups and the mixed and other ethnic groups.
