As the Executive Team sponsor of the PROUD network group, I’m honoured to help mark LGBT+ History Month at Southern Housing and its powerful theme of Activism and Social Change.
This month is a chance to reflect on the incredible progress made by the LGBT+ community and to acknowledge the activists and allies who’ve fought tirelessly for equality. It’s also an opportunity to think about the role each of us can play in continuing that journey of change.
What this month means to me
Celebrating LBGT+ History is important to me and close to my heart. Since I was a teenager (many moons ago now), I've seen so many friends and later also work colleagues from the LGBT community in various organisations not feeling they're able to simply be who they are, with wellbeing consequences. At Southern we want to set a clear sign of inclusivity and encouraging everyone to simply be themselves.
I’m constantly inspired by the work the PROUD network group does to create an inclusive, supportive space for LGBT+ colleagues and allies at Southern Housing. It’s a reminder that true social change doesn’t happen in isolation, it’s the result of people coming together, sharing their voices and lifting each other up.
This month, I encourage all of us to take the time to learn about LGBT+ history, celebrate the progress that’s been made and recognise the work that’s still needed.
