Green fingered residents at Bucklers View in Cowes have won an award, recognising their exceptional efforts with their communal garden.
The supported home for older people took part in this year’s Isle of Wight in Bloom competition, and their hard work was rewarded, as they won ‘Best Care Giving Complex Garden.’
Digging duo, Linda and Laura, are the powerhouse behind the gardening club at the scheme and the pair clearly go above and beyond to create a relaxing and accessible space for all to enjoy.
The club is inclusive, with raised beds for those with disabilities. And there are plenty of wild areas, providing habitats for wildlife. There are also several raised water butts, linked to downpipes supplied by Southern Water, to help prevent surface water flooding.
Commenting on the garden, judges said: “Maximised ideas so all residents can enjoy the garden. Regular meetings with garden committee to develop the garden. Overall, thoughtful, colourful, varied and well adapted to suit residents for health and well-being. Impressed by horticultural practice and sustainability."
Here's what the residents had to say:
“We’re working on sustainability for the community, and inclusion for our residents. It's wonderful to be recognised for our hard work.” - Linda
“I spend a lot of time in our greenhouses, and try to grow unusual things, as well as the usual veg, fruit, salad and flowers. I’m thrilled to bits we won an award.” - Laura
“Looking out my window at our beautiful garden makes me smile. I enjoy sitting with friends in the garden.” – Rita
