The road of a new housing development in Croydon has been named in memory of former Southern Housing resident, Paul de Bernier, recognising his contribution as an involved resident over three decades.

Bernier Way was officially unveiled at a special ceremony which was attended by Paul’s family, Southern Housing staff and many residents who worked alongside Paul over the years. Local councillors Humayun Kabir, Enid Mollyneaux and Clive Fraser were also in attendance at the event.

Before he passed away, Paul was passionate about strengthening residents’ voices and was committed to working in partnership with Southern Housing to impact service improvements and influence change for his fellow residents.

Bernier Way is located at Southern Housing’s new development in Croydon, which completed late last year. The scheme has brought 20 much-needed affordable homes, including a mix of one, two, and three-bedroom apartments, as well as three-bedroom houses, to the area.

Speaking at the event on 23 April, Southern Housing’s Chief Executive, Paul Hackett CBE, said: “Having the lived experience of residents like Paul working alongside us is essential. We now have four residents on our Board and close to 100 others regularly scrutinising our work, helping define our priorities, shaping our strategies and assisting in procuring our contractors.

“The unveiling of Bernier Way is a fitting tribute to a man that was so passionate about delivering great services for residents.”
