Around 100 residents from Southern Housing’s supporting independence and care services got together at the Riverside Centre in Newport on Friday 6 December to reflect on the year’s achievements and celebrate successes.
The ‘SID’ (Supported Involvement Day) event takes place every year and brings residents from across the island together for a fun-filled day of Christmas activities.
Attendees spent the day belting out their festive favourites in the karaoke room, making Christmas cards, learning the ropes of a pantomime production, and playing classic games, from bingo to Blankety Blank. The Grinch also made an appearance, interrupting a few of the workshops with some mischievous pranks.
The day wrapped with the Sidney Awards, handed out to 13 exceptional residents who have overcome challenges or achieved something special in the past year, voted for by their fellow residents and staff.
The advocate for inclusion award was given to Clare, who has been working as an expert by experience with the NHS, to help improve services for people with learning disabilities. Whilst Tyler, a resident on our 16+ homeless pathway programme, was presented the service contribution award, for consistently going above and beyond to improve his community.
Naomi Keyte, Director of Care and Independent Living said: “Our annual Christmas event is about bringing everyone together to celebrate the year but above all, to have fun! It’s always a big hit with our residents, who really look forward to the day.
“The Sidney Awards are definitely one of the highlights. We support some of the most vulnerable people on the Island, and it’s important we celebrate the achievements of those who, despite the challenges life brings them, have shown overwhelming kindness, commitment, resilience and determination.”
