April marks Earth Month and this years theme is Our Power, Our Planet. As we start a month of events and celebrations to mark the amazing work we continue to do, we hear from Bethany Austin, Sustainability Performance and Projects Manager on how YOU can make a difference.
How will you make a difference?
Whilst London having the same climate as Barcelona may not be all bad, increasing areas of London (and the rest of the UK) becoming vulnerable to overheating and flood will impact our residents, increase management and insurance costs and potentially reduce the value of homes throughout the UK. With so much going on in the world, the threats posed by climate change can feel overwhelming. But everyone can make a difference, no matter how small.
As Earth Month kicks off, just taking three simple steps can get you started:
- Be informed – use resources online to keep learning this Earth Month
- Measure your own carbon footprint – there are lots of online calculators to help you see how big your footprint is, and how you can reduce it
- Make a pledge to reduce your carbon footprint at home and work, small changes make a big difference.
Our in house Sustainability Team calculate Southern Housing’s carbon footprint every year, in line with the Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting (SECR) Regulations. This measures the different sources of carbon for our operations; from heating and powering our offices and homes, to the fuel used to power our fleet vehicles and the carbon in all the products and services we buy.
Last year we reduced our carbon emission by 5000 tonnesCO2, mainly by reducing energy use in our offices and homes, and by improving our existing homes to be more energy efficient.
While this work is continuing, this year we’re focusing on our supply chain. If we’re reducing carbon emissions by using less, you’re also saving money.
While we can’t fix climate change by ourselves, we do have the power to control our carbon footprint and influence others.
Happy Earth Month,
Bethany
